I know I sure have. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished the 2018 season with their second 5-11 season in as many years. It’s the seventh time they’ve finished with double-digit losses since 2009. But it’s not the losses that hurt Tampa Bay Buccaneers Womens T-Shirt , it’s how they’ve lost that can irk even the most die-hard fans. Here lately, it’s been a constant string of the same issues - the ones that I mentioned at the beginning of this piece. The preseason couldn’t have been worse for the Bucs. It all started when the news came out that quarterback Jameis Winston would be suspended for the first three games of the season. He was accused of groping a female Uber driver and the NFL’s investigation determined that there was enough on Winston to suspend him. The suspension brought forth a surprising amount of debate as to whether or not the Bucs should just cut ties with Winston considering his past and the fact that his on-field play hasn’t lived up to his draft selection. Fortunately, the Bucs had a legitimate backup quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick. Little did Tampa Bay know, Fitzpatrick would take a lot of heat off the organization.It’s amazing to look back on the year and think that at one time, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the talk of the league - and in a good way. A week after an enormous 48-40 win over the New Orleans Saints, Fitzpatrick donned a pair of aviators while wearing Desean Jackson’s gold chain and shirt as he spoke to reporters about “staying humble” after the Bucs took down the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles.I had friends that I haven’t spoken with in years text me about him and what the Bucs had just accomplished. For once, Tampa Bay was in the headlines for good reasons as opposed to the typical ones.Fitzpatrick was quickly nicknamed “Fitzmagic” and the Bucs were off and running. Talk began to surface about what the Bucs would do when Winston returned from suspension. Would they start Winston or keep Fitzpatrick as the starter?Tampa Bay was 2-0 on the season. Many experts and prognosticators had them at 0-3 on the season and some had them winning just two games for the entirety of 2018. They boasted the top offense in the league and the defense played pretty well against the Eagles. Things were looking up in the early stages of the year. But a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football and a 48-10 embarrassment in Chicago exposed the Bucs and all of their flaws. Fitzpatrick was benched at halftime in Chicago and the answer to who would be the starter was clear.That was the beginning of the end. Defensive coordinator Mike Smith was fired after another terrible defensive performance in a loss to Atlanta. The Bucs didn’t win again until they had to rely on a 59-yard prayer from Chandler Catanzaro to beat the Cleveland Browns. They shouldn’t have won the game. Mistakes and dysfunction at the coaching positions nearly cost the Bucs a win and should’ve easily been their fourth straight loss of the season.Still, at this point, Tampa Bay was 3-3. With a very winnable stretch of schedule coming up, a trip to the postseason was not an afterthought. That ended quickly though after Winston capped his turnover-filled comeback with a four-interception performance in Cincinnati. Just like Fitzpatrick’s benching in Chicago, Winston was benched in favor of Fitzpatrick. He nearly led the Bucs on a comeback, but the Bengals made a last-second field goal to win the game. Head coach Dirk Koetter then decided to make Fitzpatrick the starter for an indefinite period of time. The quarterback carousel was officially underway. But Fitzpatrick couldn’t save the Bucs this time around. After completing 70% of his passes for 1,330 yards Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hats , 11 TDs and 4 INTs in his first three starts, he mustered up a 65% completion rate while throwing for 817 yards, 4 TDs and 7 INTs in his next three starts. The highlight - or lowlight - was a 500-yard offensive performance against the Washington Redskins that saw the Bucs produce just three points. To put it in context, the Los Angeles Rams didn’t even have 500 yards of offense when they scored 54 points against the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in the year.Fitzpatrick found his way back to the bench after throwing three interceptions against the Giants. It was deja-vu as Winston came on and almost led the Bucs on a comeback against the Giants, but ultimately fell short. There were multiple instances throughout this time period where Koetter himself admitted that he didn’t have the answers to fix this team. He looked out-of-sorts, overwhelmed, and there were rumors that he had lost the locker room as well. Despite all the nonsense, the Bucs were able to get their first win in a month after playing a complete game against the visiting San Francisco 49ers. Then they upset the Carolina Panthers in a 24-17 victory. Andrew Adams picked off Cam Newton three times and the Bucs forced Newton to throw four total picks on the day. It was the team’s first winning streak since Week 2 and even though they were 5-7, there was still room for Tampa Bay in the playoff discussion. It looked like this team had possibly turned a corner at halftime of the rematch with the New Orleans Saints. Tampa Bay was up 14-0 and had played a very sound defensive half. Then Saints’ backup quarterback Taysom Hill decided to put all postseason hopes on ice. He crashed through Bryan Anger’s punt protection and blocked his punt, setting up New Orleans’ first touchdown drive. The Saints would go on to win the game 28-14, officially ending Tampa Bay’s hopes for a postseason berth. The Ravens then came in and ran for over 200 yards, two huge turnovers doomed Tampa Bay in Dallas, and the Falcons completed a season sweep in Week 17. Instead of finishing the season with a good win over a division opponent a la the 2017 season Tampa Bay Buccaneers Womens Hoodie , the Bucs ended 2018 on a three-game losing streak. Dirk Koetter was let go after the loss to Atlanta. It was reported earlier on Sunday that Winston would indeed be back for the 2019 season. Monday, it was reported that Jason Licht will stay on as general manager. The writing was on the wall for this team heading into 2018. Another losing season wouldn’t be accepted. Koetter didn’t have what it took to win in the NFL and he lost his job because of it. So, the dawn of a new day starts in Tampa Bay. While there will still be plenty of familiar faces around in 2019, there will be a new atmosphere - and hopefully a new culture, as well. I wish I had more positive things to write about this season, I really do. Maybe 2019 will change that. With their hire of Bruce Arians, the Buccaneers have gotten a lot of buzz in the last month. Having a proven coach has quickly rejuvenated Tampa Bay’s fan base, even if there are still holes on the roster to fill in the coming months. It’s been an exciting time for the franchise, but the hype around Arians might not be enough for everyone to overlook the team’s other issues.On Monday, ESPN.com’s Bill Barnwell projected Vegas win totals for each NFL team in 2019. For the Bucs, he set the over/under at 6.5. He addressed the team’s 3-6 record in one-possession games last year, but did note that Arians had a record of 29-12-1 in such games during his time with the Colts and Cardinals. But here’s where Barnwell has concerns about Tampa Bay in 2019: There are a few things to unpack there. Starting with the Jameis Winston point, I’m not sure “unreliable” is the right word to describe him. Inconsistent? Sure. Heading into 2019 with Arians as his coach, Winston should be in a good position to succeed. As far as being “unreliable” off the field? It seems that his issues are behind him. Brent Grimes is gone and Vernon Hargreaves III might need to work exclusively in the slot, so Tampa Bay has to fill that other outside corner position. The unit could also use help at safety. The defense is a problem right now, and yes, the rest of the NFC South might be positioned better for postseason runs in 2019. Specifically, the Saints and Falcons should both be very good next season. It’s fair to say that the defense and the difficulty of the division should be concerning. But with the talent on offense and some new voices in the locker room, the Bucs should be stronger in year one under Arians. Now, it might not necessarily be time to put deposits down on playoff tickets. The team isn’t quite there yet. But with that being said... Hammer the over.

It would make sense for the Panthers to spend an early pick on a defensive end. Unfortunately, that position is one of the most difficult positions at which to find a starter in the draft. The below chart shows how how often defensive ends turn into regular starters compared to the average at or after the Panthers’ picks in each round. These numbers are from the 2008 to 2017 drafts. AV/Year is Pro Football Reference’s Approximate Value divided by the number of years since the player was drafted. Defensive ends perform below the average in every metric I calculated. Only 39% of defensive ends drafted at or after the Panthers pick in the first round have started at least half their team’s games and only 13% have started at least 75% of their team’s games. They’ve also had a lower Approximate Value (which is PFR’s attempt to measure the impact of a player with a single number) than the average. On the bright side, the sixteenth spot has seen its fair share of good names get selected. Ryan Kerrigan, Derrick Morgan, and former CSR draft day favorite Quinton Coples were all taken with the No. 16 pick, and two have those have gone on to have solid to great careers. This draft is supposedly deep with edge rushers. The Panthers may elect to take a chance on one, but history says there’s a good chance that pick won’t pan out the way the Panthers hope. They bounce back and forth from winning season to disappointment. They win games despite the best efforts of their coaches. They fire a steady, defensive-minded head coach, only to bring in a slightly younger, steady, and defensive-minded guy. The big change in 2018 was to fire their offensive coordinator and hire freshman Norv Turner, whose job was to take the offense to the next level while keeping it consistent.All of the coordinators changed this off season, for the record. The defense was so competent with new pieces and new coordinator Eric Washington as to almost be boring. Panthers’ fans can all but take for granted that they will have the privilege of watching a competent — and often stifling — defense. Special teams, meanwhile, had some good returns and botched an extra point. In other words, you wouldn’t know there had been coaching changes if somebody hadn’t told you.For the offense Carolina Panthers T-Shirt , it wasn’t until the 5th play from scrimmage — a 1st and 20 on the opening drive — that the Panthers saw their first positive play of 2018. It went for three yards. Cam Newton then scrambled for 15 yards to set up 3rd and 2. He converted on a QB sneak. I can’t speak to “the next level,” but that is certainly consistent with the last several years of Panthers offense. If you walked away after those first six plays then you would believe that the 2018 Carolina Panthers were going to be a strong defense supporting a fly-by-the-seat-of-Cam’s-teeth offense. A new look offense that was suspiciously familiar.You also would have missed the real story: The Panthers are just a few injuries away from being scary.Newton, while the most potent player on the team, is no longer the entire story of the offense. Christian McCaffrey, his one fumble aside, had a strong day and made plays even when he didn’t have room to work. Devin Funchess didn’t break out as a number one receiver, but he did prove that he can be a consistent option in the intermediate passing game in Greg Olsen’s (hopefully brief) absence. Torrey Smith and Jarius Wright both showed up larger and in bigger moments than any depth receivers the Panthers have rostered in years. We’re not even talking about Alex Armah and C.J. Anderson showing that they can be contributors if needed. Remember that we’re often mired in arguments over practice squad wide receivers at this point in the season.The Panthers’ offense has options and weapons and hope for the first time in years. The only thing they are missing is time. The offensive line is hurt. Ryan Kalil apparently had a fever. We hope it doesn’t cause him to sleep poorly on his neck. Daryl Williams injured his right knee again. Amini Silatolu looked like he need ‘OnStar for pass rushers’ in his helmet again. Some of these issues will be resolved with the attention of good doctors and the application of rest over the coming weeks. Some will simply fester in the blind spot of veteran-enamored coaches. This is the way things are.That’s a whole lot of question marks and bad portents for a team that won —for a team whose offensive line played relatively well for most of the game. First year starters Taylor Moton and Greg van Roten had a shaky beginning, but they settled down and proved to be the least of Turner and Newton’s worries. That is huge for the Panthers’ hopes.The offense had a few mistakes throughout the game, but that was only to be expected. Turner doesn’t know these guys but so well and they only know him just as far. There is a balance that they are trying to strike. It will take time to find that. Unlike years past, now you can actually see their goals and their misfires on the field. There is a palpable sense of intention and progress that Carolina Panthers Hats , when not sidelined by injury, could mean the world for Newton and for the Panthers.That brings us back to time. The difference between the time it takes to run a play and the time it takes for a defensive end to blow a play up is almost imperceptible. Fortunately, it is obvious what needs to change to produce the time that Newton and Turner need to get their offense in rhythm. The right tackle position is a fight between the ghost of Daryl Williams’ knee, Amini Silatolu, and recent trade acquisition Corey Robinson. It is also the biggest question mark casting doubt on the Panthers’ offense being able to operate on the level of their defense. It is where they are currently losing time. The Panthers have long been a team that relied on talent on both sides of the ball to overcome coaching. 2018 looks to field one of their most talented rosters in years. Answer that question at right tackle, give Newton just a little more time, and the Panthers could become one of the safer bets in the NFC.

I can’t remember the last time we had an offensive tackle rank first in something other than false starts.It was apparent early on that the Panthers’ quarterback was not having his best day throwing the ball, with one monster exception: Moving to the defense, it was also apparent early in the game there would be little room between the tackles for Giants rookie running back sensation Saquon Barkley.On the flip side the Panthers didn’t get much pressure on Giants quarterback Eli Manning (one sack). I can give them something of a break for favoring the run defense. Stopping Barkley had to be a priority and pass rushing specialist Julius Peppers was up for the task.I figured Peppers would get the start and I was okay with that. I just expected him to be a liability in run support. That was not the case, so hat tip to Peppers for a nice performance. I would have taken a couple of sacks as well but hey, let’s save those for next week. Pittsburgh Steelers Eric Weddle Jersey , Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco pretty much admitted what many in Baltimore’s sports media circles were thinking — If he’s healthy, gets good weapons and a solid offensive line, he can succeed.“I’m not throwing the ball any different,” Flacco said postgame. “We’re a better offense. We are. I’m playing better for sure, but throwing the ball and all of that stuff, but offensive football takes all eleven guys.” Flacco carved the Steelers up, going 28-for-42 on passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns. The 363 yards that he threw for were the highest that a Ravens quarterback has thrown for against the Steelers (previously set by Jeff Blake with 336 in 2002). His passer rating was a strong 109.5 and he had 8.64 yards per attempt, his highest of the season. He also hit 11 different receivers through four quarters against Pittsburgh.Through four games, Flacco has gone 110-for-171 (64.3%) passing for 1,252 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He holds a 96.9 passer rating. His two picks came against Cincinnati in a short week on the road, but outside of those flubs, Flacco has looked very poised. At this point last season, Flacco went 73-for-118 (61.9%) on his passes with 601 passing yards, four interceptions and six interceptions. He also had a passer rating of 65.0. Last year was a complete far cry from this season, at least when it comes to the personnel that surrounds Flacco and his health.During the offseason Cheap Za'Darius Smith Jersey , Baltimore completely overhauled the receiving corps — signing John Brown, Willie Snead IV and Michael Crabtree, as well as drafting Jaleel Scott and Jordan Lasley. They also added two tight ends in Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews in the 2018 NFL Draft. In the prior season, Baltimore had Mike Wallace as their number one receiver with Jeremy Maclin and Chris Moore as the number two and three receivers respectively. Moore is now the fourth receiver, Maclin is out of the NFL and Wallace is on the Philadelphia Eagles’ injured reserve list. Baltimore also had Ben Watson as their leading pass-catcher last season as the tight end. He has since departed to New Orleans, but both Maxx Williams and Andrews (both with 119 receiving yards) have nearly the same amount of yards as he does (157). Add that in with an Andrews touchdown, plus 104 yards from Nick Boyle and the Ravens have a much more formidable pass-catching quartet from the tight end position.At offensive line, Flacco has Ronnie Stanley at left tackle, Alex Lewis at left guard, Matt Skura at center, Marshal Yanda at right guard and James Hurst at right tackle. Lewis missed the entire 2017 season with shoulder surgery. Yanda missed 14 games after breaking his ankle in Week 2 of last year. Now with both healthy and Hurst playing solidly in the passing game at right tackle, Baltimore’s pass protection has been key to their success on offense. “On defense, everyone can mess up and one guy can make the play,” Flacco continued. “On offense, that rarely happens. Everyone has to play the same football. When I’m out there throwing for a lot of yards today, it’s not like today was one of the toughest Pittsburgh Steelers games I’ve ever played. I’ve played really tough games against these guys and probably have thrown for like 150 [yards]. But. I take a lot of pride in some of those games Alex Lewis Jersey , because we played our heart out there. I think our guys got open.”The most important aspect is Flacco’s health. In the past two seasons, Flacco came back from a major knee injury and a back injury. Both of these ailments are debilitating to a quarterback’s mobility and ability to drive the ball downfield. Both were obvious issues for Flacco last season and his yards per attempt especially took a hit in 2017 (5.9). Juxtaposed with a fully healthy camp and a litany of receiving threats, Flacco is now averaging 7.3 yards per attempt, which would be the second-highest of his career after 2010 (7.4). This has been something that has been discussed for Flacco’s entire career. How would he look if he has solid weapons? In 2012 with Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones, Ray Rice and Dennis Pitta, Flacco won a Super Bowl. Fast forward two seasons, Flacco still had Smith, but lost Jones (cut), Boldin (traded) and Rice (suspended). The Ravens added Steve Smith Sr. and Owen Daniels — two veteran pass catchers that would help Flacco get to the AFC Divisional Round.None of the receiving corps that Flacco has had in the past equals the amount of potential that this one offers. Brown (388 yards) is on pace to break Michael Jackson’s single-season receiving yardage record (1,201 yards). He also has three touchdown grabs. Snead IV has 198 yards and a touchdown and Crabtree has 184 yards and a touchdown. The most underrated quality is that each receiver attacks a different part of the field. Brown averages 22.5 yards per catch from the “Y” receiver position. Snead IV averages 11.0 from the slot. Crabtree averages 10.2 yards per catch from the “X” receiver position. Andrews averages 11.9, while Williams is at 9.9 and Boyle has 11.6 yards per reception.Another thing that has aided Flacco is the improved playcalling from offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. Some of goes with Flacco’s health, as Mornhinweg was less tempted to call deep shots with a quarterback who had an ailing back. The playcalling has also gotten creative, lining Williams off of the line and in between the center and guard with an unbalanced line. Baltimore has also gotten their running backs involved in the passing game, with Buck Allen and Alex Collins holding a receiving touchdown of their own.
