Ocala, FL (SportsNetwork. Jimmy Graham Super Bowl Jersey .com) - Na Yeon Choi rallied to win the season-opening Coates Golf Championship on Saturday, but that didnt stop Lydia Ko from becoming the No. 1 player in the world. Choi carded a 4-under 68 to end the championship at 16-under-par 272 as she won for the eighth time on the LPGA Tour. Ko tripped to a costly double-bogey on the 17th hole to fall from the lead. She scrambled for par at the last as she closed with a 1-under 71. Ko was joined in second place at minus-15 by Jessica Korda (66) and Ha Na Jang (70). Despite the loss, Ko will ascend to the top spot in the world rankings on Monday. That will make her the youngest player, male or female, to become the No. 1 player in the world. Amy Yang also posted a 71 in the final round at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club. She ended alone in fifth at 10-under-par 278. Alison Walshe (66) took sixth at 9-under 279, while Brittany Lang (70) ended alone in seventh at minus-8. Stacy Lewis, who also could have taken over the top spot in the world with a win this week, stumbled to a 3-over 75. She fell to 7-under 281 and ended alongside Sun Young Yoo (69) and So Yeon Ryu (72) in eighth place. MORE TO FOLLOW. Dexter Williams Super Bowl Jersey . They have watched it from afar. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Ryan Getzlaf scored with 5.2 seconds left in overtime, Jonas Hiller made 31 saves in an emergency start to get his 18th career shutout, and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 on Friday night. Viktor Fasth was scheduled to start in goal for the Ducks, but sustained a lower body injury during the warm-ups. So Hiller got the call got his second shutout of the season. Hiller was tested right away, stopping shots by Richard Panik and Mark Barberio during a power play after teammate Luca Sbisa was sent off for interference 1 1/2 minutes after the opening faceoff. The Ducks put 42 shots on Ben Bishop, who was magnificent right to the end. Getzlaf carried the puck into the Tampa Bay zone and took a wrist shot that glanced off the bottom of Bishops arm, but defenceman Sami Salo wasnt able to sweep away the loose puck and it dribbled across the goal line before Bishop could reach back for it. The goal was Getzlafs 13th. It was the first visit to Honda Center by the Lightning since Nov. 3, 2010, when the Ducks beat them 3-2 on another overtime goal by Getzlaf. Kyle Palmieri had a chance to put the Ducks ahead with about 9 1/2 minutes left in regulation when he circled the net and attempted a wraparound with Bishop way out of position, but Salo got his stick in the way at the last instant. Less than 2 minutes later, Tampa Bay centre Tyler Johnson made a terrific deke on defenceman Bryan Allen in the left circle and went in alone on Hiller, who thwarted him at the edge of the crease. The Lightning, who have given up four short-handed goals already this season, were bailed out twice by Bishop in the second period on excellent scoring chances by Andrew Cogliano. The Ducks, who came in with the third-worst penalty-killing percentage, shut down four Tampa Bay power plays before getting their first chance with the man advantaage. Right wing Tim Jackman made his Ducks debut a day after they acquired him from Calgary, and got into a fight with B.J. Crombeen midway through the first period during his second shift. The last time Jackman played against the Ducks on Oct. 16 at Anaheim, he received a game misconduct for butt-ending defenceman Sami Vatanen during the Flames 3-2 loss. Another of Jackmans new teammates is Sbisa, who got a five-minute major for head-butting him on Feb. 6, 2012, at Honda Center in the Ducks 3-2 shootout win. The Lightning lost the first three games of this western trip in regulation. The point they got out of this one prevented what would have been only the third time in club history that they failed to get a single standings point during a trip of four or more games. The only times it happened were Jan. 16-21, 2001 (Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Columbus), and Nov. 5-11, 1997 (Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose and Phoenix). CORTLAND, N. Travis Kelce Super Bowl Jersey .Y. -- Rex Ryan got to ask the questions after practice for a change. The New York Jets coach playfully reversed roles with a reporter during his news conference at training camp Saturday. After giving an injury update on his players, Ryan stepped from the podium and took a seat with the rest of the media -- and told ESPN New York beat writer Rich Cimini to take his place. Ryan asked Cimini if he wanted to start his newser by discussing the injuries, and Cimini cleverly answered with a few of the coachs often-repeated lines: "Im not going into too much depth. Were leaning on the doctors and trainers." Laughs all around. Ryan then peppered Cimini with several questions for nearly 10 minutes, such as "Whats the toughest part of the job?" and "Why did you get into this profession?" Cimini, in his 26th season covering the Jets, handled Ryans inquiries flawlessly. Not so easy trading a playbook for a notebook, coach? "Ill make em way harder later," Ryan said, smiling. "Ive got to come up with some better questions." Ryan, in his sixth season as coach of the Jets, acknowledged that he sometimes gets tired of hearing the same questions about the quarterbacks -- from Mark Sanchez to Tim Tebow to Geno Smith and Michael Vick. "Its like, guys, how many times are you going to ask me a question about a quarterback thing that clearly I dont want to answer," he said. "Lets ask it sideways, lets do it this way. And I know you guys try to pick on me and sometimes Ill make a mistake and then you guys pounce all over it." And, yes, when asked about Tebow specifically, Ryan said he "absolutely" grew weary of the barrage of questions "because youre talking about a backup quarterback." Tebow spent the 2012 season with the Jets and played sparingly. Ryan asked Cimini about his favourite stories on the beat, and he mentioned the runs to the AFC championship games in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. "Thats when you were in your bragging days," Cimini said, "and you would give us a lot of back pages." Without missing a beat, Ryan fired one more self-deprecating zinger. "Yeah," he said, "unfortunately, some front pages, too." Demarcus Robinson Super Bowl Jersey . The rookie quarterback threw for 309 yards and a touchdown to lead the Montreal Alouettes past the Toronto Argonauts 20-9 on Tuesday night. Marsh did a solid job of managing the game, surrendering just one interception after throwing four and losing two fumbles coming off the bench last week to rally the Als past B.C. 39-38. Marsh received plenty of help Tuesday night from a Montreal defence that held Toronto (5-4) to just one point from two impressive early drives, then forced four turnovers, including linebacker Shea Emrys 38-yard first-half fumble return for a TD. "When youre a young quarterback trying to get into a groove and you see your defence make huge stops, that gives you a lot of confidence," Marsh said. "Our defence did nothing but that, they did a great job, an amazing job. "I have to get hit a few times in order to get into and I got hit and I was into it, I just got into a groove. Its an awesome feeling winning your first start. Its a great start to a career." Marshs 57-yard completion to Eric Deslauriers set up Sean Whytes game-winning 15-yard field goal against B.C. The 23-year-old Texan finished 18-of-27 passing versus Toronto and got the better of Argos sophomore Zach Collaros before a Rogers Centre gathering of 18,863 consisting mostly of enthusiastic university students. They witnessed a contest that felt more like a pre-season game given the seven combined turnovers, 19 penalties and 18 punts. But Marshs calm demeanour impressed Alouettes veteran receiver S.J. Green, who had eight catches for 143 yards, both game highs. "Tanner came out very poised and took control of the game," he said. "He made the plays and kept us moving. "We already believed in him and its great how he showed up and played well." Montreal interim coach Jim Popp said Marshs biggest attribute is his ability to always look downfield. "He keeps his eyes upfield, thats the biggest thing and he gives us a chance," Popp said. "He gives us a chance to make plays." Collaros, Torontos starter with incumbent Ricky Ray (shoulder) out six weeks, was 21-of-32 passing for 261 yards with a TD but threw an interception and had a costly fumble. The former Cincinnati star was hurt at 9:59 of the second when taken down by an illegal Chip Cox horse-collar tackle. He was replaced briefly by Trevor Harris but returned on Torontos next possession. Montreal (4-5) doesnt have time to enjoy the win. The Alouettes host Toronto on Sunday to complete the home-and-home series. Montreal is tied with Hamilton (4-5) for second in the East Division after improving to 2-0 with veteran Anthony Calvillo (concussion) sidelined. The Argos certainly had their chances. Their best opportunity to get back into the game came late in the third when Dontrelle Inmans 10-yard catch put them at the Montreal 13-yard line. But Popp successfully challenged the play, correctly contending Inman fumbled and Alouette Byron Parker recovered. Marsh then hit Duron Carter -- the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter -- on a 477-yard completion to end the third to set up Sean Whytes 14-yard field goal at 1:50 of the fourth for a 20-8 advantage. Chris Jones Super Bowl Jersey. "That (challenge) was a big play because had they scored it wouldve been a different game," Popp said. "Im just glad we were able to get the ball and move it up the field." Toronto also opened the game with two impressive drives but only managed Noel Prefontaines single off a missed 30-yard field goal at 2:39 of the first. Prefontaine set up for a 30-yard boot on the Argos second drive but holder Harris bobbled the snap and was held short of the first down, giving Montreal possession at its own three-yard line. Collaros hit John Chiles on a 34-yard TD pass at 10:01 of the first to put Toronto ahead 8-0 but Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said the missed early chances were big. "I felt like we couldve had a much larger lead there late in the first quarter," he said. "We didnt and thats part of football games and weve got to be able to continue play. "But I felt we left some opportunities out there." Predictably, Milanovich didnt pin the loss on Collaros. "Its never all on one guy," he said. "You cant turn the ball over as many times as we did and have the penalties. "We started off decently, we werent able to finish drives. We got into a little bit of a funk and werent able to get out of it." Montreal tied the season series 1-1 as the Argonauts won the first meeting 39-13 on Aug. 8. The two teams play their regular-season finale Nov. 1 at Rogers Centre. Prefontaine booted the convert and two singles. Arland Bruce III scored Montreals other touchdown. Whyte kicked two field goals and two converts. Emrys 37-yard return of a Collaros fumble and Marshs 28-yard TD strike to Bruce in the second quarter staked the Alouettes to an unlikely 17-8 lead in a sloppy opening half of missed opportunities. Emry scored at 13:31 less than five minutes after Bruce gave Montreal its first lead of the game. "He just wants to be that guy," Bruce said of Marsh. "You can see that in the classroom, you can see that at practice. "He doesnt get flustered. If he doesnt make a play, hell stand up as a man and say, Hey, thats my fault guys, Ill get better, and thats what you want from a quarterback. I think hes going to get better." NOTES -- Astronaut Chris Hadfield performed the ceremonial opening kickoff . . . Bruces first-half TD catch was the 90th of his CFL career, making him just the sixth player to reach that lofty plateau . . . Torontos next four games are on the road. Rugby, not just hockey, has been in Burkes heart for decades. Hes played it, watched it and will now take part in directing it as well. Rugby Canada announced Tuesday that Burke is joining its board of directors, giving the former NHL executive a chance to get involved in what he calls his "second favourite sport." "Im really excited about it," said Burke. "I think its a great sport and I think the future of rugby in Canada is very bright." The former general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs first played rugby following a brief playing career in hockey. When he was a 23-year-old law student, Burke said he noticed the Harvard Business School Rugby Football Club practising near where he lived and asked if he could join. "I never played before, never watched before. My older brother played a little bit but I wasnt familiar with the sport," he said. "But I learned to love it. I played for two years after I graduated even though I was practising law." Now 58 years old, Burke is an avid fan of the game. He said he goes to as many of Canadas international games in Toronto as he can, and once even saw the senior mens team play Japan in Bordeaux, France in 2007. "Brian has a deep understanding of professional sports in North America and, with his successes and contacts across the National Hockey League and beyond, were happy to have him involved with Rugby Canada," Graham Brown, chief executive officer of Rugby Canada, said in a release. Burke has had a long relationship with Rugby Canada. Hes spoken at several events put on by the organization and said hes known former president Rick Bourne since around 1990. Aaron Jones Super Bowl Jersey. He said his first priority will be to get more familiar with the senior womens team, who captured its first Nations Cup title earlier this month after beating England, 27-13, for the first time in 20 years. Burke is already impressed with the men, who defeated the U.S. Eagles 27-9 on Sunday in the first leg of qualifying series for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. Canada, ranked 15th in the world, hosts the U.S. in the finale Saturday at Torontos BMO Field. The winner of the total-points series advances directly to the World Cup, while the loser gets another shot with a series against Uruguay. "Theyre beating sides that used to beat them easily, theyre in most matches. Theyre not in the elite group yet but theyre on their way," he said. Burke also sees potential in rugby sevens, which will make its Olympic debut at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. "It bears very little resemblance to 15s. But I think to me, the most exciting thing about sevens is we can attract an audience with our sevens program," he said. "We can get people watching rugby to say, This is cool, and then next thing you know theyre watching 15s." Prior to his tenure with the Leafs, Burke served as a GM with the Hartford Whalers, Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim, winning a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007. Hockey is still the priority for Burke, who is currently a part-time scout with the Ducks. A dual citizen, Burke was also GM for the United States mens team that won a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Games and is the director of player personnel for the 2014 Sochi Games. ' ' '

VANCOUVER -- After a frustrating season which saw his team miss the playoffs, Vancouver head coach John Tortorella was rather blunt Monday in his assessment of what the Canucks must change if they hope to return to the NHLs elite. Lane Taylor Super Bowl Jersey . While Tortorella took some of the blame, he also didnt pull any punches. He said the Canucks are getting old, the core group has become complacent and the team needs to get younger. "I felt from day one that its stale," said Tortorella. "Thats not their fault. This is a group that has been together for a long time. "It needs youth. It needs a change. The team needs to be retooled. Its a young mans game. Its certainly not a criticism of (the veterans). We need to surround them with some enthusiasm." After a promising start under Tortorella, the Canucks finished the year with a 36-35-11 record for 83 points. Vancouver managed just 13 wins in 41 games since Jan. 1 and settled for a 25th-place finish in the overall standings. The poor showing has already cost Mike Gillis his job as president and general manager. New president Trevor Linden -- the Canucks former captain -- still must decide Tortorellas fate. The two were scheduled to meet later Monday. Centre Ryan Kesler, who was the subject of trade rumours this year, said the players have to take responsibility for the season. "Were all flabbergasted right now," said Kesler, who led Vancouver with 25 goals. "Going into this year I would never think we would be sitting here in this situation." The Canucks ended their season with a 5-1 win over the Calgary Flames last Sunday but the victory was soured by an ugly incident late in the second period. Daniel Sedin was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being hit from behind by Calgarys Paul Byron. Sedin was taken to hospital and later released. After the hit, Sedin lay crumpled on the ice and couldnt raise his head. "I was scared," he said at Mondays season-ending news conference. "I tried to lift my head at first and couldnt get it off the ice. "The only thing I thought was lay still. I tried to move my hands and it felt good. I went to the hospital and everything looks good. I feel OK today." Tortorella said fans and management cant keep reminiscing about the Canucks loss in Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup final, but instead must concentrate on making the team better again. "Were not in 2011," said the man hired last year to replace the fired Alain Vigneault. "We have to stop talking about 2011. "The core needs to change." Canucks captain Henrik Sedin said the team was "really good" until halfway through the season when injuries became a problem. Both Sedins, Alex Burrows and defenceman Chris Tanev all missed a significant number of games with injuries. "You never want to use injuries (as an excuse but) we had a tough year," said Henrik. "We had guys playing out of position. We had guys playing more minutes than they were used to. "We had to play a different way and we werent able to win playing that way." Tortorella said during this period he made a coaching mistake by giving the room to the players. "I didnt get back in the room and continue to teach the details," he said. "I didnt stay on top of it. "I needed to be pounding away at the details. I think that hurt us in situational play. I think that hurt us in trying to understand how you change momentum. Thats not the team, thats me. Thats my biggest regret." A lack of scoring haunted Vancouver all season. The Canucks managed just 196 goals, leaving them tied for second fewest in the league. For the first time in a non-lockout season, Vancouver had just one 20-goal scorer in Kesler. Daniel Sedin finished the year with 16 goals and went through a stretch of 23 games without scoring. Henrik Sedin had just 11 goals. Burrows, who hadnt scored less than 25 goals in the last four full seasons, had just five. "People talk about we are playing too much defence," said Daniel. "Honestly we played as aggressively as we have been. "That has nothing to do with why our production is down. Its up to us to play like we can." Defenceman Alex Edler, who begins a US$30-million, six-year contract next season, finished the season at -39, the worst plus-minus in the NHL. "There was a lot of changes this year (in how we played in own end) and a lot of new things to get used to," said Edler. "I think I didnt have the year I should have had but I know I am a good player." The Canucks have had several distractions to deal with over the last year. Tortorellas hiring was a surprise. Goaltender Cory Schneider was traded during the summer, meaning Roberto Luongo was the Vancouver starter after believing he was gone. Luongo was eventually traded to Florida. Tortorella missed six games after being suspended for trying to get into the Calgary locker-room following a line brawl to open a Jan. 18 game against the Flames. The Canucks were 2-4-0 during that period, then 2-7-1 when Tortorella returned. "When you lose a head coach its never good," said Henrik Sedin. "I dont think it was specifically that incident that made us start losing." Ray Nitschke Super Bowl Jersey . The Wizards will try to stay on track Tuesday in the finale of a three-game homestand versus the Minnesota Timberwolves. Washington has the second-best record in the East at 17-6 and the Toronto Raptors are slightly ahead at 19-6. The Wizards have won seven in a row at home and four straight overall, including Sundays 93-84 win over the Utah Jazz. Bradley Beal scored 22 points, John Wall had 16, eight assists, six rebounds and five steals, and Paul Pierce ended with 15 points in the win. The Wizards shot 48.7 percent and scored 25 points off 17 Utah turnovers. They also held the Jazz to 16 points in the third quarter (30-16) and improved to 14-0 when keeping opponents under 100 points. We didnt play our (style of) basketball in the first half, Wizards center Marcin Gortat said. We were patient (in the second half) and started playing better. The Wizards pushed their home record to 12-2 and are 8-1 in the past nine games. The 17-6 start is the best since an identical beginning to the 1968-69 - 1974-75 seasons. The last time Washington was 12 games over .500 was at the end of the 1978-79 campaign (54-28). Wall and Beal have carried the Wizards so far and the latter is averaging 18.5 points in his last four games. Wall leads the Wizards with 17.7 ppg and the team is one of the toughest on defense, allowing 96.6 points. The Wizards, who willl visit Miami on Friday, are averaging 103. Minnesota will be on the road the next two games against Washington and Boston, and went 1-3 on a recent homestand. The Timberwolves lost their second straight game and eighth in nine tries with Sundays 100-94 setback to Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Bryant passed Michael Jordan for third on the NBAs all-time scoring list and finished with 26 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute. Shabazz Muhammad scored a game-high 28 points and rookie Andrew Wiggins registered 16 points for the T-wolves, who made 42.2 percent of their shots and just 3-of-10 3-pointers. Minnesota trailed by 10 at 64-54 and later evened the score at 73-73 early in the fourth quarter. Wiggins made two free throws to make it 94-94 and the Lakers took over from there thanks to Bryants big 3-pointer. Timberwolves guard Zach LaVine said he grew up a fan and reflected on Bryants earlier feat of passing Jordan. Passing Michael Jordan is a big feat. Not many people do that, LaVine said. I mean, like, ever. The Wolves are winless in their past three road games and have a 2-8 ledger as the visitor this season. They are 1-17 when allowing 100-plus points. Minnesota and Washington split a pair of meetings last season and will meet again Feb. 25 in the Twin Cities. The Wizards have won two straight at home versus the T-wolves. ' ' '

SYRACUSE, N. Jordan 1 Wholesale .Y. -- Coach K said he hoped this game would live up to its billing. It did, and then some. Jerami Grant scored eight points in overtime to finish with a career-high 24 and Jim Boeheims No. 2 Syracuse stayed unbeaten, topping Mike Krzyzewskis No. 17 Duke 91-89 on Saturday in a matchup of the two winningest coaches in Division I history. The Orange withstood a tying 3-pointer in regulation and won before a Carrier Dome record crowd of 35,446. "It was just a great game," Boeheim said after career victory No. 941. "I dont think Ive ever been involved in a better game in here where both teams played at such a high level. Both teams just went after it. Weve had a lot of games that have been here that are great. Theres never been one as good as this one." C.J. Fair scored a career-best 28 points as Syracuse (21-0, 8-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) set a school record for consecutive wins to start a season. The Orange remained one of three undefeated teams in the nation, along with No. 1 Arizona and No. 4 Wichita State. "I knew for us to win I would have to contribute offensively," said Fair, who shot 12 of 20. "I was able to not force things once I got going. I felt I was the hot hand and my teammates kept giving me the ball." Grant took over in the extra period, slamming home three dunks as Duke was forced to downsize after Jabari Parker and Amile Jefferson fouled out in the final two minutes of regulation. "They were playing small. We knew we had a lot of mismatches around the court," Grant said. "After I got the first dunk, they just kept feeding me." Dukes Rasheed Sulaimon beat the buzzer in regulation with an off-balance 3-pointer that tied it at 78. The Blue Devils led 87-84 with 80 seconds left in overtime before Syracuse rallied. "Both teams played with so much heart," Krzyzewski said. "We were scrambling a lot because of our foul trouble and our kids scrambled well. They scrambled well enough to put us in a position to win ... Just a tough loss." Syracuse students camped out in the bitter cold for nearly two weeks and were part of a crowd that was charged up from the start for the first ACC meeting between these longtime powers. It was Dukes first game against the Orange in the Carrier Dome. Parker had 15 points and nine rebounds for Duke (17-5, 6-3). The Blue Devils, who had won five in a row, get their chance to avenge the loss in three weeks when the teams meet again at Cameron Indoor Stadium. "We just needed one more play, whether it was a rebound or a shot going in," said Andre Dawkins, who scored five points in overtime before fouling out in the final minute. "We just needed one play." From the moment Boeheim and Krzyzewski walked onto Jim Boeheim Court to a deafening roar and hugged at midcourt surrounded by a sea of orange, the atmosphere was electric. Singing and acting star Vanessa Williams, a Syracuse alum and former Miss America, performed the national anthem. The game was chock full of story lines, well before the tipoff. The game was tied at 78 after regulation, and there were two more ties in the extra session. Grant had three straight slams for the Orange, while Dawkins hit a follow and a 3 from the top of the key as Duke took a three-point lead with 1:20 left. Two free throws by Ennis got Syracuse within one and two more by Grant put the Orange up 88-87 with 39 seconds left. Dukes Rodney Hood missed a dunk attempt against Rakeem Christmas with 12.2 seconds remaining -- Hood wanted a foul but nothing was called. Two more free throws by Ennis as Jefferson fouled out made it 90-87. Sulaimon sank a pair of free throws for Duke to make it a one-point game with 9.4 seconds left. Fair made one of two from the foul line with 5.5 seconds to go. Duke scrambled to get off a last shot and Quinn Cook missed a rushed fling from the right wing at the buzzer as Syracuse escaped. Grant had 12 rebounds. Trevor Cooney and Ennis each scored 14 points for the Orange. Ennis had nine assists with two turnovers in a game in which both teams committed just eight and Christmas had seven points, 10 rebounds and six of Syracuses nine blocks. Sulaimon finished with 16 points. Jefferson, Dawkins, and Hood finished with 14 points for Duke, which made 15 of 36 on 3s. Syracuse led 38-35 at the break and Fair continued the play that made him the preseason pick for ACC player of the year. Parkers three-point play at 11:05 gave Duke a 56-54 lead, its first since just past the midpoint of the opening half. But just when he seemed set to spark the Blue Devils, Parker picked up two quick fouls to give him four and Dawkins was whistled for his fourth just over a minute later. Fair responded by scoring eight points as the Orange went up 66-59 with 6:37 left. Undaunted, Tyler Thornton rescued Duke with three 3-pointers in less than two minutes and Parkers basket underneath tied it at 70-all with 3:53 to play. Sulaimon hit two 3-pointers in the final minute of regulation. He got a chance at a four-point play, but missed the foul shot with 47.6 seconds left. The bad news is that with 78 games left to play, they have removed almost all of their margin for error. After winning their first five games in June, injuries and a cooling offence caught up with them. They only won seven of their next 22 and finished the month at 12-15, exactly their record in April. In other words, thats two losing months out of three so far this season. Two things are saving them, the general mediocrity of the entire AL East and that brilliant month of May that saw go 21-9. If you go back to 2002, only twice have the Jays headed into July with a better record than the one they have now. In 2006, they were 45-34 and, in 2003, they were 46-37. In the latter, they tailed off to 42-41 the rest of the way and finished at 87-75, while in the former, they went 42-39 down the stretch and finished at 86-76. Both were in the era before the extra Wild Card and, in 2003, they wound up in third place in the division, 15 games back of the Yankees in the East and seven-and-half games out of the Wild Card spot taken by the Boston Red Sox. They didnt fare much better in 2006, finishing three games back of the Chicago White Sox for the Wild Card. Even if there had been a second Wild Card, they would have missed it by a game to the Angels. The Blue Jays will have to go 45-33 the rest of the way to finish with 90 victories, which figures to be around the number they will need to put themselves in the conversation for a post-season berth, division title or a Wild Card. The AL East will probably be won within the division. The Baltimore Orioles have the best record within the East at 22-16, while the Jays and Yankees are both 17-15. The trouble part for the Blue Jays is they are only 3-6 against the Yanks this season and havent won in New York so far this season or in all of last year. Seven of the Jays remaining 10 games against the Yankees are in the Bronx. On the plus side, theyve split with Baltimore thus far in 2014 and six of their remaining nine against the Os are at Rogers Centre. Boston, though still a long shot, is slowly entering the equation again, as well. The BoSox are six out in the East and six out in the Wild Card race. The Blue Jays still have 13 left with Boston, seven at home and six at Fenway. Tampa Bay is pretty much an also-ran now. The Jays still have 12 left with them, including six in September, but Joe Maddons teams arent know for packing it in in the final month. So the Jays will play 44 of their final 78 games in the East, 22 at home and 22 away. Going 26-1) over than span just might be enough to put them in the playoffs if they hold their own in their other 34 games. To break it down even further though, the Blue Jays and T-Bay have the fewest number of home games left of the teams in the East with 37 apiece. The Yankees have the most with 43 and Baltimore has 41. Although the latter two have stumbled a bit in their own parks this season, being at home and travelling less and playing meaningfuul games in their own facilities could be a sizeable edge in a close race. Adidas NMD Outlet. Boston, too, has a favourable home/road split at 42-38. Then there is the matter of strength of schedule down the stretch. The Blue Jays play 40 of their 78 against teams that currently sport winning records and 38 against teams with losing records. The Yankees, on the other hand at my count, play only 38 against teams above .500 and 44 games against teams below .500. Again, that gives them an edge. The Orioles, though, play 48 games against teams with winning records and only 33 against teams with losing marks. So, the Blue Jays and the Yankees get the edge there. For the Blue Jays, the next five weeks could ultimately tell the tale. In July, they play only nine of their 17 games at home, broken up in the middle by the All-Star Game. After the next two games at home to the Milwaukee Brewers, they hit the road for 10 in 11 days including four at the Oakland Athletics, three at the Los Angeles Angels and, after an off-day, three at Tampa Bay. Then, after a seven-game homestand, they go on another 10-game journey over 10 days that includes three in New York versus the Yankees, three at Fenway against the Red Sox, culminating with four at Houston against the Astros. If they are still in it at that point, the Blue Jays will at least have a shot. Somewhere near the end of that span, Brett Lawrie should be back, as well. - With Milwaukee hitting town, its interesting to compare the numbers of the two guys who were disgraced by PED suspensions that, this year, have been key factors in getting their teams into first place in their respective divisions. The Brewers Ryan Braun, coming off his 50-game suspension of last season, is batting .290 for the N.L Central leaders with 11 homers, 46 RBI, an .849 OPS and 18 walks versus 52 strikeouts. Braun also helped the Brewers cause by agreeing to move to right field this season. Melky Cabrera is having a stand-out season in his own right and has put up almost identical numbers, hitting .299 with 11 homers and 42 RBI, an .809 OPS and 23 walks to 46 strikeouts. Cabrera is playing some strong left field, as well. Both have a decent shot at being at the All-Star game two weeks from Tuesday at Minnesota. - Speaking of the All-Star game, isnt the Home Run Derby starting to feel like the NBA Slam Dunk Contest? Every year it seems many of the bigger stars opt out. This year, American League captain Jose Bautista has to deal with the fact his own teammate Edwin Encarnacion doesnt want to compete and neither does Orioles slugger, Nelson Cruz. Then, White Sox rookie Jose Abreu, who slugged two dingers at Rogers Centre Friday night against the Jays and is one of baseballs emerging stars, isnt inclined to take part either, though, he apparently hasnt entirely closed the door. Good on Jose Bautista for agreeing to be part of this again. But if most of the other sluggers the fans really want to see dont want to be part of it all, then whats the point? ' ' '

BOSTON - While Tampa Bays string of six straight winning seasons is over, the Rays staved off finishing with a losing record at least one more day with a rally that couldnt have come much later. Air Max Plus Store .Ben Zobrists two-out double in the eighth drove in Tampa Bays first two runs of the game and started a five-run rally for the Rays in a 6-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.Zobrist entered the game just 4 for 38 against Boston starter Clay Buchholz and nearly doubled his total with three hits.Zo had had no luck against him, said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon, who planned to give Zobrist the night off until learning Kevin Kiermaier couldnt play because he was ill. I was going to give him the day based on what I just said, but Kiermaier had the vision to be ill and that put Zo back in the lineup. Better manager than me.Matt Joyce added a solo homer in the ninth and Alex Cobb pitched seven strong innings for Tampa Bay. The Rays entered the series between the bottom two teams in the AL East two days after their 81st loss, a total that guaranteed Tampa Bay will not finish with a winning record.Cobb (10-8) kept the Rays slim hopes for a .500 finish alive, holding Boston to one run on five hits despite struggling through early control issues with his fastball. The one thing Ive started to learn as Ive gotten more experience is I can go out and battle when I dont have my best stuff, said Cobb, who struck out three and walked one.Daniel Nava had an RBI double in the fourth for the Red Sox. It stood as the games only run until Tampa Bay got to Boston starter Clay Buchholz in the eighth.Buchholz (8-10) entered the game on a streak of 22 straight innings against the Rays without allowing a run. Its tough to swallow a€” giving up five in one inning late in the game.Zobrist doubled with two on to drive in the first two runs and scored on a single by David DeJesus. Buchholz hit Evan Longoria with a pitch and was replaced by Tommy Layne, whose wild pitch allowed both runners to advance and score easily when James Loney added a single. All five runs went to Buchholz, who allowed eight hits over 7 2-3 innings. SAN FRANCISCO -- Even with standouts Bryce Harper and Gio Gonzalez on the disabled list, the Washington Nationals are shutting down the team with the best record in baseball and taking over the title as the leagues hottest club. Jayson Werth hit his first homer in almost a month and drove in three runs, and the Nationals capitalized on Matt Cains erratic start to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-2 Wednesday night for their fourth straight win. "We kind of got Cain on the ropes early, got his pitch count up, got some big hits early to kind of set the tone for the game," Werth said. "Its hard to recover from." Cain (1-4) walked the first three batters he faced before Adam LaRoches two-run single during a three-run first inning. Werths solo shot in the fifth and two-run single in the ninth provided the rest of the pop for the Nationals, who have won 10 of 12, including the last three at San Francisco. Former third baseman Ryan Zimmerman made a pair of diving catches in left field to highlight a stellar defensive effort, and Tanner Roark (5-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings to propel Washington to another win. "Were playing great as a team right row," said Roark, who struck out four and walked none. "Just keep it going. Its exciting." Brandon Crawford and Pablo Sandoval each drove in a run for the Giants, who have lost a season-high tying three straight after winning five in a row. Cains struggles might have been the most disappointing thing of all for the Giants. In his second start since a stint on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, the former ace reverted back to his early season woes against Washington. Cain gave up four runs and three hits in five innings, walking five and striking out four. "It was too much of a deficit to come back from. We needed a better start than that. I wanted some clean innings. I made it too difficult," Cain said. The finale of the four-game series is Thursday, but the NL East-leading Nationals already have handed San Francisco its first series loss since losing two of three at Pittsburgh from May 5-7. Beforee the Nationals showed up in San Francisco this week, the Giants had not lost two in a row since May 16-17 to the Marlins. Dean Lowry Super Bowl Jersey. The Nationals are doing it by getting contributions at the plate, on the mound and in the field. After Crawfords RBI triple in the fourth, second baseman Danny Espinosa made a diving stop on Gregor Blancos sharp grounder and threw out the speedy runner at first. Zimmerman, filling in for Harper in left, also swiped another run from San Francisco in the sixth when he made a diving catch of Crawfords slicing fly after Michael Morse doubled. "Im kind of learning on the fly," Zimmerman said. "Got a good break on it. It kept tailing away. I dove and caught it. The landing wasnt very smooth, but in the end, I caught the ball." Sandoval, scratched from the starting lineup because of an illness, singled home a run as a pinch-hitter in the seventh to whittle Washingtons lead to 4-2. Zimmerman slid in to snag Angel Pagans short fly for the third out. With his back right leg almost touching the dirt, Werth went low to launch his sixth homer of the season to put the Nationals up 4-1 in the fifth. Werth, who had not homered since May 14 at Arizona, singled with two outs in the ninth off Yusmeiro Petit to extend Washingtons lead to 6-2. Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard and Jerry Blevins each tossed a scoreless inning to help Washington finish off San Francisco again. Closer Rafael Soriano had been warming up in the bullpen before Werths single. "The best part about that is we could put the big scary guy back in his cage," Werth said, "and save him for (Thursday)." NOTES: The Nationals placed catcher Wilson Ramos on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and called up catcher Sandy Leon from Triple-A Syracuse. ... TAMPA, Fla. Jerick McKinnon Super Bowl Jersey . -- Montreal goalie Carey Price had his second strong game this season against Tampa Bay, and this time got a much better result. Lars Eller scored the lone shootout goal, Price stopped all three shots he faced in the tiebreaker, and the Canadiens beat the Lightning 2-1 on Saturday night. "I really appreciated our team effort," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. "The energy was there right from the get-go. Guys competed hard, they were quick on puck, and we didnt force plays when we didnt have to." Valtteri Filppula, Nikita Kucherov and Teddy Purcell all failed to score on Price, who made 44 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Lightning on Nov. 12. "Youve got to be happy with three saves," Price said. Eller made a couple moves before beating Ben Bishop on the Canadiens first shootout attempt. Eller has made all three of his shootout attempts this season. Tomas Plekanec scored in regulation for Montreal. Price stopped 23 shots through overtime. "Hes been phenomenal," Therrien said about Price. "In the third period, when they gave us a push, he was making key saves. He showed again tonight he is one of the best goalies in the NHL." Martin St. Louis scored for the Lightning, who also got 20 saves in regulation and overtime from Bishop. Tampa Bay had its five-game winning streak end. "If there is a silver lining, we do get a point out of this," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. Plekanec opened the scoring, beating Bishop with a backhander 5:15 into the second period. It was his 169th goal, which moved him past Shayne Corson and Gilles Tremblay into sole possession of 31st place on Montreals career list. St. Louis tied it from the top of the right circle on Tampa Bays sixth shot of the game at 11:43 of the second. The Lightning captain has a goal in four straight games and eight points during a six-game points streak. Montreal had the first six shots, including an in-close backhander by Daniel Briere and a shot from the left circle from Plekanec. Nate Thompson got Tampa Bays first shot 11 minutes into to the game, a backhander stopped by Price. The Canadiens outshot Tampa Bay 15-9 through two periods. "That was a tough start for us," Cooper said. "Our timing was off, our passes were off. A good thing Bishop was on because that could have gotten ugly for us quickly." Bishop had won his previous five starts, allowing six goals during the stretch. The Lightning had nine of the 11 shots during the first 9 minutes of the third, and 14-6 overall edge in the period. The Pumas have just a week to bounce back from a 73-13 loss in Soweto, starting their second season in the southern hemisphere championship with the biggest defeat in the 17-year-old competition. Phelan on Thursday brought in prop Marcos Ayerza, a new lock pairing in Julio Farias Cabello and Mariano Galarza, left wing Horacio Agulla and fullback Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino. Ayerza recovered from injury and returned at loosehead prop, with Juan Figallo switching to tighthead and Mattias Diaz dropping to the bench. Cabello and Galarza were picked in the second row after experienced lock Patricio Albacete was hurt early in the first game at FNB Stadium. Manuel Carriza, the other lock who started on Saturday, was out of the 23 altogether. Bath wing Agulla was promoted after starting the tournament on the bench, while Amorosino replaced Juan Martin Hernandez at fullback. Hernandez also went off injured in the first half in Soweto. Center Felipe Contepomi retained the captaincy after scoring all of Argentinas points at FNB Stadium. Argentinas regular skipper, No. 8 Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, was still missing with a left calf injury. The Pumas will be boosted by home advantage this weekend -- they held South Africa to a 16--16 draw in Mendoza last year and probably should have won that game for a first victory ever over the Springboks. LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw would have welcomed a little help from the umpires in the ninth inning, if only to end the game a bit sooner. Matt Breida Jersey . When he didnt get it, the Dodgers ace finished off the Braves on his own. He scattered nine hits and struck out nine while tying his career-best winning streak of 10 games in a 2-1 victory Thursday night that completed Los Angeles three-game sweep of Atlanta. "Fortunately for us a lot of times he comes out on top," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "Hes an amazing talent who is just as strong in the ninth as he is in the first. Theres no drop-off ever. Were spoiled rotten." Kershaw (13-2) notched his second consecutive complete game for the second time in his career following his three-hit shutout at San Francisco last weekend. He is unbeaten in his last 11 starts with a 10-0 record since June 2. The left-hander beat the Braves for the first time during the regular season in his career. "You want to be the same from the first inning to the ninth," Kershaw said. "I got hurt this year at the beginning, but now I feel pretty strong." Kershaw had to work to close out the Braves in the ninth, when he finally gave up a run. With one out, B.J. Upton singled and advanced to third on Tommy La Stellas single. Freddie Freeman went down swinging for the second out, bringing the cheering crowd of 51,163 to its feet. But the Braves closed to 2-1 on Justin Uptons infield single to third. Juan Uribe charged to field the ball and fired to first, where Adrian Gonzalez stretched for the throw. Upton was called safe by umpire Mike Estabrook. Manager Don Mattingly challenged the call as the crowd grew rowdier. Kershaw crouched behind the mound waiting for a decision. It took 2 1-2 minutes before the umpires upheld the call, putting the potential go-ahead run on first. Evan Gattis grounded out to shortstop to end the game. "It looked really close. The umpire got it right," Kershaw said. "It would have been nice to get that overturned." Yasiel Puig homered as the Dodgers stretched their winning streak to a season-high six games and swept the Braves for the first time since taking four in a row from July 26-29, 1990, at home. The Dodgers, who turned three double plays, moved a season-best 3 1/2 games ahead of the idle Giants in the NL West. Julio Teheran (10-7) dueled with Kershaw, but fell behind in the first. Puig walked and scored from first when Gonzalez doubled to deep right-centre field. "I had my best and everything was working, but I made a couple of mistakes and they got two runs," Teheran said. "It was fun (pitching against Kershaw). I know its not that easy to face him, but we had a real battle out there." Puig extended the lead to 2-0 with his 13th homer in the third. Teheran gave up five hits in eight innings. He struck out nine and walked three in his third complete game of the season and his first loss. TRAINERS ROOM Braves: Outfielder Jason Heyward missed his third straight game with a sore back that he strained last week chasing a foul ball. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he hopes Heyward can return sometime this weekend in San Diego. Dodgers: Left-hander Scott Elbert was outrighted to Triple-A Albuquerque. ON DECK Braves: Atlanta heads to San Diego for a three-game series beginning Friday. Left-hander Mike Minor (4-6, 5.23 ERA) will start the opener. Dodgers: The Cubs arrive Friday for a three-game set, with Dan Haren (8-8, 4.49 ERA) taking the mound. The right-hander lost all four of his starts in July. UPTONS HITTING Justin Upton is hitting .347 with nine runs scored, six doubles, two homers and eight RBIs in 14 games since the All-Star break. DOMINATING PUIG Puig has hit safely in all 11 career games against the Braves, batting .511 and that includes four post-season games. It was his 16th consecutive game hitting safely against an NL East opponent since May 2. Kevin Greene Jersey . The Marlies centre set up three goals, including the game-winner, as Toronto cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Oklahoma City Barons in American Hockey League action. Nick Mullens Jersey . 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell. http://www.custom49ersjersey.com/custom-fred-warner-jersey-large-2818d.html . Argentina, who have yet to beat New Zealand in 17 meetings, rocked the All Blacks with an early converted try to backrower Juan Manuel Leguizamon and led 7-0 after five minutes. But Smiths double in the 23rd and 26th minutes - when Argentina was reduced to 14 men by the sin-binning of hooker Eusebio Guinazu - turned the tide of the match and set up New Zealands third straight Championship win. CLEVELAND -- After going through a rocky April, the Cleveland Indians got more bad news before even playing a game in May. All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained side muscle prior to Fridays game against the Chicago White Sox. Kipnis injury is expected to sideline him from three to five weeks. Losing Kipnis is yet another setback for a team thats struggled in several areas. Cleveland has lost six straight and is in last place in the AL Central. The Indians have yet to resemble the club that made the playoffs as a wild-card team in 2013. While one poor month doesnt guarantee a losing season, general manager Chris Antonetti knows its time to see some improvement. "There is obviously urgency," he said. "We want to try to turn things around as quickly as possible. Regardless of what the immediate results are, we need to play better as a team, really in all facets. Im confident well do that." Kipnis injured his oblique during an at-bat in the fourth inning of Tuesday nights loss to Los Angeles. He had an MRI on Thursday that showed the injury was more serious than originally thought. "Its not one of those ones you can play through," Kipnis said. "You have to let it fully recover because if you push it and re-injure it, youre right back at step one." The 27-year-old Kipnis is hitting .234 with three homers and 12 RBIs for the slumping Indians, who went 0-6 on a West Coast trip against the San Francisco Giants and Angels. "Trust me, watch how much this training staff hates me after about a week,"; he said. Charlie Garner Jersey. "As a player, you never like watching the game and not be able to help out the team. Hopefully, Ill get back out there as soon as possible." Kipnis signed a six-year, $52.5 million contract at the start of this season. His injury was the low point of a trip during which the Indians scored 13 runs and batted .183. "That probably wasnt our most fun road trip," manager Terry Francona said. "Unfortunately, we managed to do some things every game that didnt help us win." In an effort to break the slump, pitchers Corey Kluber and Cody Allen wore chicken outfits while standing in the outfield during batting practice Friday, but the Indians numbers havent provided many laughs. Cleveland is 12th in the AL in runs scored and leads the league with 26 errors, resulting in 17 unearned runs. Opening day starter Justin Masterson is winless in six starts, and several key hitters, including Carlos Santana, Nick Swisher and Asdrubal Cabrera, have struggled. Catcher Yan Gomes, who signed a six-year, $23 million contract in spring training, has made seven errors after committing three last season. "Teams are going to go through stretches of the season where they dont play great," Antonetti said. "There are going to be ebbs and flows to the season." "I believe well find a way to dig ourselves out of what weve dug," Francona said. The Indians recalled infielder Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Columbus. Ramirez has a .319 average with four homers and 17 RBIs in 23 games for the Clippers. ' ' '

We work with the CFL head office, the local team, and the design group theyve hired, so its basically a four-pronged group that works together to share their perspectives. From the leagues standpoint, they work with us on video review, so we have to ensure we have the correct angles to support the video review system. The league also provides video for each teams coaching staff. They install a minimum of two cameras per game to shoot various angles so they can teach the players. So the league is very active to make sure that space is there for them. Its quite an active dialogue from all sides.New stadiums have opened in cities across the CFL in recent years. Are there challenges that come with broadcasting from a new venue for the first time? The game ball from the 1976 Grey Cup, which was won by the Ottawa Rough Riders.Theres no blueprint for stadium broadcasts: Winnipeg is vastly different from Ottawa, or Hamilton, or from the design thats now taking place in Regina. Each one is creative in its own way, and that leads to additional challenges. But we have a full crew on hand for the Redblacks opener, and theyll be testing everything. After two or three games, we typically have everything running smoothly. In Ottawa, we had one hiccup with our end zone camera: the only place we could realistically put it was on top of a two-and-a-half storey building connected to a condo. So we worked through it with the developers, the Minto Group, and we now have a position there that will act as an end zone camera not only for us but the CFL as well. It doesnt matter how well you plan, there are always challenges. What do you have planned for TSNs on-site panel from the home opener at TD Place? James Duthie on the TSN ddesk at TD PlaceFor the opening game at TD Place, weve got a nice little corner position down at field level. Vapormax Plus Clearance. Well have our TSN set there with James Duthie and Jock Climie on it, and there will be interviews with Ottawa football greats Russ Jackson and Tony Gabriel. Theyll pay a visit to the set, and were also hoping to have CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon join us for an interview as well.James is from Ottawa and hes a big CFL fan, so we wanted to include him, and Jock lives in Ottawa and played for the Ottawa Rough Riders, so we think thats a good fit to complement our main CFL ON TSN panel, which will broadcast from Toronto.Along with TD Place stadium, the entire Lansdowne Park area is currently undergoing a complete redevelopment. What are the most interesting elements of it?I was fortunate enough to produce games from Frank Clair Stadium back in the day, as well as hockey games from the Civic Centre arena, so Im very familiar with the area. They tore down the south stands, which was a good thing, and the new south stands are quite amazing. Theyve also renovated the north stands, which now look almost brand new, though theyve been there for quite some time. New seats and some paint can do wonders. And the seat colour structure, with the red, black, and light grey, certainly lends itself to a pretty camera picture.Ottawa Rough Riders legend Russ JacksonBut the best thing about the stadium is that the surrounding area will be fantastic. With newly constructed condos in the area, new restaurants, new bars, a cinema, and lots of added green space, the environment theyve created at Lansdowne Park will be a destination for people in Ottawa. That coupled with a sharp-looking stadium will make for a great experience for anyone whos planning to go to both Redblacks games and any other events held there. ' ' '

BARCELONA, Spain -- Atletico Madrid sweated out a 1-0 victory over Villarreal without leading scorer Diego Costa to stay top of the Spanish league on Saturday, while Lionel Messi scored two goals in Barcelonas 3-1 win over Real Betis to stay one point behind. Tai Streets Jersey . Gareth Bales long-range goal helped make sure Real Madrid didnt miss star Cristiano Ronaldo as it cruised to a 4-0 victory at Real Sociedad, staying within three points of the pacesetters in third place. Messi converted a 14th-minute penalty and followed up a second spot kick that was blocked by goalkeeper Adan Garrido to seal the victory in the 86th. Messi recorded his 24th and 25th league goals of the season -- pulling him level with Diego Costa as the leagues second-leading scorers behind Ronaldos 28 -- but Barcelona again showed problems in defence that last-placed Betis failed to fully exploit. Earlier, Atleticos Raul Garcia scored in the 14th and Diego Simeones side held out to deny Villarreal in the second half as it stayed undefeated at its Vicente Calderon stadium through 17 league games this season. "We didnt have the strength and energy that we have had on other days," said Simeone. "But my team played smart, and when you play smart you make up for the lack of energy to pull out the win." Atletico hopes Diego Costa will recover from a right thigh injury for Wednesdays Champions League quarterfinal with Barcelona after they drew 1-1 in the first leg. Atletico then has six games left as it tries to claim its first league title since 1996. While David Villa was ineffective before being substituted with half an hour to play, Garcia again proved his value to Atletico as a versatile attacking midfielder by pushing aside his marker to head in Jorge "Koke" Resurreccions corner kick. Also, Rayo Vallecano won 3-0 at home over Celta Vigo to get its fifth win in seven rounds and move six points from the relegation zone. Barcelona unfurled a banner in the Camp Nou stands before the match that read "Hands Off La Masia," referring to FIFAs one-year transfer ban after footballs governing body found the Catalan club guilty of breaching regulations in signing youth players for its renowned training academy. Barcelona club president Josep Bartomeu also said that he had a "friendly and cordial conversation" with FIFA president Joseph Blatter about the ban. "We are going through some tough times, but we have managed to isolate ourselves and concentrate on the matches," Barcelona forward Pedro Rodriguez said. Messi put Barcelona in charge after Alexis Sanchez was fouled by defender Jordi Figueras in the area. Barcelona started to show the same drop in energy that had affected Atletico after Xavi Hernandezs free kick grazed the crossbar. But just when Betis was playing its best, Figueras gifted Barcelona a goal by knocking Adrianos pass into his own net in the 67th. A minute later substitute Ruben Castro scored for Betis with Barcelona disorganized at the back, using a feint to make two defenders slide to the turf before he poked the ball beyond goalkeeper Jose Pinto. Messi finally calmed the nervous crowd after Antonio Amaya handled Neymars cross in the box. Adan saved Messis first try and even recovered to get a glove on his follow-up effort, only to see the ball trickle over the goalline. With Ronaldo nursing his hurt left knee, Madrids visit to Sociedad was billed as its toughest outing left in the league. Instead it proved to be a pleasant trip to San Sebastian, as Madrid put together a no-nonsense performance highlighted by Bales outstanding strike. Sociedads early push sputtered out when its former player Asier Illarramendi tilted the game in Madrids favour just before halftime by scoring a rebound from Karim Benzemas shot that goalie Claudio Bravo pushed down in front of his net. After Sergio Ramos and Benzema had both hit the woodwork, Bale pounced on Bravos scuffed goal kick that fell to him 30-meters outside the area before quickly unleashing a blistering left-footed strike to seal the result in the 66th. Pepe swept in Madrids third in the 85th before substitute Alvaro Morata scored with two minutes to play. Larry Allen Jersey . In the other Group A game, the Czech Republic stunned Canada, 5-4 in a shootout. Dominik Simon scored the deciding goal in the tiebreaker. New QPR manager Ian Holloway says he is feeling fresh as he prepares for his first game back at the club on Saturday afternoon. Zion Williamson Jersey . The former Sky Sports pundit departed from Loftus Road in 2006 after five years with the club, and went on to take charge of the likes of Crystal Palace, Blackpool and Millwall. He has been a member of the English Football League expert panel after leaving The Den in March 2015, and says the time away from management has given him a new perspective ahead of his return to the Hoops. This is exciting for me because I feel like Ive got a chance to start again and start running around with old legs but a new bit of knowledge in there, so I feel fresh. I feel like I can be worked with and trusted at a club that I trust and that is absolutely vital, he told the EFL Weekly podcast. EFL Weekly podcast Ian Holloway, Karl Darlow and Danny Higginbotham feature on this weeks EFL Weekly podcast After I left Millwall and I got speaking to Gary [Hughes, head of football at Sky Sports] and he told me about the EFL and plans for 10 in 10, it did me the world of good because I was still in and around football. To see it first hand behind everybody, I was behind the lens and it was amazing. When you cant do it anymore because your legs have gone, youve got a brain that you wish you had at the start of your career because you know everything. Football is a bit cruel because youre probably at your best time when you cant run anymore, so I want to pass that over if I can. Holloway says he wants to work with people who care about Queens Park Rangers after returning to the club as manager Yes I will be different. Anybody who has been a player of mine, my meetings will be a lot shorter. I want to say a lot more with less words and I want to guarantee that what we do will be a Premier League standard of training.First up for Holloway is the visit of Norwich this weekend at Loftus Road, who were also his final opponents as Millwall manager when the Canaries beat his then-Lions side 4-1 at The Den.They are a fantastic club. Theyve showed brilliant management by going up, coming down, going up and they have a great structure with some wonderful players, he added. Now, he has four in less than a week.Manning and Sanders connected for a trio of touchdowns Thursday night in the Denver Broncos 35-21 victory over the San Diego Chargers. We understand in this offence, it can be anyones night at any moment, said Sanders, who didnt catch his first TD pass for Denver until Sunday night, when Manning set the career record. Im just happy tonight was my night.Sanders caught all nine passes Manning threw his way and gained 120 yards Thursday night. He needs just 106 more yards to top his best season he ever had in four years in Pittsburgh. Thats all in a nights work for Sanders, who has four career 100-yard receiving games, all this season.Im enjoying playing with him, Manning said. Hes got a great work ethic. He really loves football and he brings that energy to practice every day and also to the playing field. ... He was pretty special tonight. With the Chargers banged-up secondary double-teaming red-hot receiver Demaryius Thomas, Sanders caught TD throws of 2, 31 and 3 yards. The last one followed Chris Harris Jr.s interception of a flustered Philip Rivers.Rookie running back Juwan Thompson added two TD runs as the Broncos (6-1) tightened their grip on the AFC West over the Chargers (5-3), who lost their second straight game. Its an accomplishment for the room, said Ronnie Hillman, who carried 20 times for 109 yards. Its a touchdown for the room. Hes taking them, but thats all right. He earns them. Thats a tough 2 yards to get. Im just playing my role getting him down there.Manning finished 25 of 35 for 286 yards with three TDs and no interceptions or sacks five nights after breaking Brett Favres career touchdown mark.Sanders speed, combined with Hillmans second gear, is the juice GM John Elway had in mind when he said the Broncos could be better this year than they were last season.John Elway and his staff went out and wanted to increase our team speed in all phases of the game and I think weve done that, coach John Fox said.Sanders called Denver wide receivers heaven when he joined the Broncos in the spring. He spent his first five games in a Broncos uniform piling up the yards — 473 of them — but wistfully wishing to become the 45th player to catch a touchdown pass from Manning. The only blemish in Sanders breakout night was his fumble in the fourth quarter that Wes Welker recovered. His teammates teased him that hell be carrying around the football wwith the green beanie as punishment next week. Greivis Vasquez Jersey. But its not big deal, Sanders said. Its only going to make me better. Each time Thompson scored, Rivers and the Chargers responded with 80-yard drives that ended with touchdown catches by tight end Antonio Gates. His first score was a 4-yard grab on fourth down, his second a 10-yard catch with 9 1/2 minutes left that made it 35-21.Rivers finished 30 of 41 for 252 yards with three TDs and two interceptions.Brandon McManus missed a 53-yard field goal with six minutes remaining, giving the Chargers great field position, but safety Rahim Moore intercepted Rivers pass to Malcolm Floyd at the Denver 4 and the Broncos grounded it out from there. With Sanders having a big day, Demaryius Thomas quietly topped 100 yards himself for the fourth straight week, finishing with 105 yards on eight catches, a team record.Manning broke another of Favres records on this night, albeit a much more obscure one: he now has 16 seasons with 20 or more touchdown passes, one more than Favre. And hes approaching another of Favres marks: with his 157th career multiple TD game, Manning is two shy of Favres mark in that category. After losing at home to the Chargers on a Thursday night in December — Denvers only home loss last season — the Broncos changed their work week. They practiced without pads and helmets. But their first two drives led to punts as defensive co-ordinator John Pagano again found ways to thwart Manning even with a banged-up secondary that was missing cornerbacks Brandon Flowers (concussion) and Steve Williams (groin). Then, Sanders starting finding the end zone.Theyre better than us right now, San Diego safety Eric Weddle said. Thats the reality of it. Its a long season. When we meet them again, however many more times, well be better.Even Manning found something he didnt like on his and Sanders big night. He didnt like it when the scoreboard operator fired up the crowd when the Broncos were trying to chew up the clock.Im not sure what hes doing, hes playing music and showing players dancing and getting the crowd fired up when we have the ball, Manning complained. I dont think we should be doing that. I dont think we should be showing their quarterback on the sideline. I thought that was disrespectful. Our fans are great. Our fans our loud. Our scoreboard operator, it wasnt his best night.Notes: Gates became the Chargers career leader in yards receiving with 9,610, breaking the mark set by Hall of Fame WR Lance Alworth (9,584). ... PARIS - Bordeaux coach Willy Sagnol has apologized for making disparaging comments about African players in football, although he still maintains they were misinterpreted against a backlash of widespread criticism. Peter Shorts Jersey Store .Sagnol, capped 58 times by France and a member of the team which lost the 2006 World Cup final, gave a question and answer session Tuesday to readers of Sud Ouest regional newspaper when the subject of African players was raised. The advantage of what I would call the typical African player is that he isnt expensive when you sign him, (he is) a player who is ready for combat, but football isnt just about that, Sagnol said.Explaining himself, he continued: Football is also (about) technique, intelligence. You need a bit of everything. You need Nordics too, Nordics are good.Speaking Thursday at a pre-match news conference ahead of Saturdays game with Lens, Sagnol tried to explain his comments. If by my lack of clarity, or my imperfect semantics, I may have shocked, humiliated or hurt people then I am sorry, Sagnol said. The interpretation that these people may have made does not reflect my way of thinking in any way or my humanist convictions. However, he said the comments made sense in a sporting context. When I spoke about the African (player) who is cheaper and ready for combat, I simply meant to talk about the young African player arriving in Europe with all of his will to win and often to escape from a precarious situation, Sagnol continued as he read from pre-prepared notes. Then, since we were in a debate about football, the intelligence I spoke of was obviously related to tactical intelligence. The forming of young players in Africa, probably because of a lack of financial means, or (lack) of infrastructure, isnt always as complete as whats available in Europe.Sagnol distanced himself from accusations that his viewpoint was offensive. In no way did I mean to talk about an individuals intelligence in the proper sense of the term. Regarding certain accusations of racism, Im 37 (and) Ive spent 32 of them in a football dressing room. Ive never had a problem with anyone, the former Bayern Munich player said. But Lens coach Antoine Kombouare, who was born in New Caledonia, is among those who felt offended by Sagnol.Lets make things clear: this is not a case of him being clumsy. Hes really messed up, Kombouare said. What he said is serious. Its unacceptable. Explaining that an African player is cheaper ... I felt humiliated and hurt. The International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICRA) strongly condemned Sagnol, as did former Marseille president Pape Diouf, who called for African players to boycott one round of French league games in protest.French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet, who formerly employed Sagnol as coach of Frances Under-21 side, defended him, while former teammate Lilian Thuram — an active anti-racism campaigner — was more measured.I played alongside Willy, hes somebody I respect. I know him very well, Thuram told Sud Ouest. I dont think you should put Willy Sagnol on trial, but you should put prejudice on trial. Each one of us harbours some prejudice, which is why people working in football, who have a certain exposure to the media, should be educated on this subject.Sagnols captain at Bordeaux is Senegal international Lamine Sane, who called Sagnols comments clumsy before defending him, as did club president Jean-Louis Triaud. He doesnt have any twisted ideas. He believes in all the black players in the team, Sane told French radio. We believe in him and we hope to go very far with him.Bordeaux forward Henri Saivet, who is black, told RMC radio that Sagnol apologized. We all now pertinently well that the coach is not a racist, Saivet said. Hamiltons best lap of 1 minute, 24.482 seconds was 0.238 seconds faster than Rosbergs in the second session. The Mercedes drivers, who have won nine of the 10 races this season, were the only ones finishing below 1:25 and were over a second faster than in the first practice. Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel was third. Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso was fourth in the second practice, nearly a second off Hamiltons pace, followed by Kevin Magnussen of McLaren, Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari, Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull and surging Valtteri Bottas of Williams. Gaining pole position for Sundays race is considered a huge plus on the twisting Hungaroring circuit, where passing opportunities are very limited. Hamilton is looking to win his third race in a row and his fifth overall on this track. Despite far outpacing the rest of the field, Hamilton said neither the soft nor medium Pirelli tire compounds had been satisfactory during the first two practice sessions on the famously dusty circuit. ";Neither tire was good, to be honest," said Hamilton, the 2008 F1 champion who completed 38 laps in the second practice, among the most of all drivers. Ken Panfil Jersey Store. "They both have very poor grip." Hamilton said Mercedes was being careful about avoiding excessive tire wear during the practices. "It feels like you have to slow down too much now, to the point that its a bit boring," Hamilton said, adding that he expected a "tough day" during the last practice and the qualifying session on Saturday. The British driver, who crashed during qualifying a week ago for the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim due to brake failure, could be heard complaining about the brakes again during practice over the team radio. Later, however, he did not seem too concerned. "I just had some brake settings that werent great," Hamilton said after the second practice session. "This is a continuing issue we need to work on." Hamilton won four of the first five races of the season, later adding a fifth in at the British Grand Prix. He has 176 points, 14 behind Rosberg and 70 ahead of Ricciardo, the only other winner in 2014. ' ' '

VILLANOVA, Pa. Dexter Williams Super Bowl Jersey . -- The court fight over NFL concussions should heat up soon as a judge in Philadelphia weighs the fairness of the proposed $765 million settlement. Lead players lawyer Sol Weiss expects the courts financial expert to advise the judge "shortly" on his view of the class-action plan. Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody has voiced concerns that the fund wont cover 20,000 retirees for 65 years. And critics believe the NFL is getting off lightly, given its $9 billion in annual revenues. "When you look at it objectively, it didnt matter how much money the NFL had, it was, Is there enough money to take care of (people)?" Weiss said Friday at a seminar at the Villanova University School of Law outside Philadelphia. The proposed settlement would pay as much as $5 million for men with the most serious neurological injuries, such as Lou Gehrigs disease. The awards would depend on a retirees age and diagnosis. Those with serious dementia would get $3 million, while an 80-year-old with early dementia would get $25,000. All plaintiffs would get cognitive testing, and follow-up care if needed. "Even if only 10 per cent of retired NFL football players eventually receive a qualifying diagnosis ... it is difficult to see how the monetary award fund would have the funds available over its lifespan to pay all claimants at these significant award levels," Brody wrote in January, when she asked for more actuarial details and appointed New York financier Perry Golkin to advise her. Weiss remains confident the fund is sufficient, and that most players will sign on rather than spend years fighting the NFL in court. The surprise settlement emerged in August, after several months of closed-door meetings with a mediator. "There were a lot of talks; they went on for a long period of time ... and the NFLs tough," Weiss said Friday. "We did get to a point where there was enough money on the table to take care of the sick players and their families, and thats the time we make the deal." Brody was expected to hold a fairness hearing in the coming months, when objectors can challenge the plan, and decide whether to opt out. "Those players and their lawyers who think its not enough money will get an opportunity to be heard," Weiss said Friday. Brody could approve the settlement, reject it, or perhaps suggest the two sides negotiate anew. However, the plaintiffs lawyers consider time of the essence, especially for families dealing with the dementia, depression and even violence associated with traumatic brain injuries. "These are profoundly injured people. Some of them are dead, and their families deserve compensation," said Weiss, whose lead plaintiff, former Atlanta Falcon safety Ray Easterling, committed suicide in 2012, a year after filing suit. "They forget things. They have a lot of anger issues. They cant hold a job. They really cant have a meaningful relations," Weiss said. "Their lives are upside down." The Patriots, who had a bye in Week 10, will look to continue the offensive success they had a week earlier when New England scored 55 points and racked up 610 yards of total offense in a 55-31 drubbing of the Pittsburgh Steelers.WINNIPEG - Backstopping the Minnesota Wild to a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday left a good taste in Darcy Kuempers mouth. And thats not something the netminder had been feeling on the weekend, when food poisoning caused him to miss playing in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Jets on Saturday.Kuemper made 28 saves as the Wild (17-13-4) snapped a five-game winless streak. Weve had quite a bit of bad luck with illness and injuries, Kuemper said. Were hanging in there. Its been a tough road. Were trending in the right direction. It was nice to get rewarded tonight. We really picked up our game in the second half and it showed with a big win.Marco Scandellas goal with 12 seconds left in the second period held up as the game-winner.It was the third of three straight goals Minnesota scored in the second period to erase Winnipegs 2-0 lead. Ryan Carter and Justin Fontaine had the other goals for Minnesota and Brett Sutter and Kyle Brodziak assisted on both.It was Winnipegs first loss in regulation in its past six games (4-1-1).Michael Frolik and Mathieu Perreault both scored on the power play for the Jets (19-11-7).Scandellas blast from the point may have hit a Jets skate on the way past goalie Michael Hutchinson.Thats how Hutchinson, who made 28 saves, saw the puck change direction. It was going wide and then all of a sudden their guy was driving wide to the net with our guy tied up, Hutchinson said. Im not sure if it hit our guy or their guy, but it hit his skate and went right in the net.Hutchinson made his third straight start after Jets head coach Paul Maurice had Hutchinson and Ondrej Pavelec rotate for 12 games. The rookie netminder said he wasnt thinking about whod get the start in net when Winnipeg hosts the New York Islanders on Wednesday afternoon. The only thing that matters is us winning on New Years Eve, Hutchinson said. You cant lose back-to-back games in this league, especially at home. Im sure well be ready to go for that game.Winnipeg didnt get its first shot on goal until seven and half minutes into the game. The Wild had seven at that point.Frolik scored his eighth goal of the season, unassisted, at 16:00 with a shot that went off Kuemper and into a top corner. We feel comfortable to play with the lead, but after the second period we said we are one goal short. We want to feel comfortable in those situations, too, so we just want to go there and have a push.We got a couple chances thhere, but (the puck) didnt go in. Oren Burks Super Bowl Jersey. We just have to kind of learn from it and forget this one and go for the next one.The Wild had a two-man advantage for 1:54 late in the period, but couldnt capitalize. They outshot the Jets 14-8.The Jets carried their third power play of the game into the second and Perreault scored his ninth of the season at the 20-second mark to make it 2-0.Blake Wheeler sent a quick pass across the front of the net and Perreault shot the puck over Kuempers left pad. Bryan Little also assisted on the goal, extending his point streak to four games with two goals and three assists.Carter made it 2-1 with a close, high shot over Hutchinson at 4:12, while Fontaine evened the score at 16:31 when he went to the net on a breakaway and got a nice pass from Sutter.Im real happy with how we played the game and the contributions from everybody at both ends of the rink, Wild head coach Mike Yeo said.I think we did a lot of really good things. Theres a small margin between winning and losing. Its one save at a crucial moment, one goal at a crucial time. We were able to bust through.Wild defenceman Ryan Suter slashed the back of Perreaults right knee early in the third period, sending Perreault to the ice in pain. He limped to the bench, but soon returned to the ice. No penalty was called.Kuemper made a couple of big saves late in the game to preserve the win.Thats what we need from him, Yeo said. If we get that kind of goaltending on a consistent basis, were going to be a dangerous team.We know thats what hes capable of. Were trying to rush a young player along a little bit here, but thats the reality of where hes at. Hes good enough to be a starter. Minnesota goalie Niklas Backstrom is out with a stomach virus. The Wild travel to play Columbus on Wednesday.Notes - Winnipeg forward Evander Kane is out until February with a lower-body injury. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Chris Pronger Jersey . - John Elway broke the mould. The Denver Broncos general manager bucked this years trend when he hired his former backup QB and offensive co-ordinator Gary Kubiak as his head coach.Every other head coach vacancy thats been filled has gone to men with defensive roots: John Fox in Chicago, Jack Del Rio in Oakland, Jim Tomsula in San Francisco, Rex Ryan in Buffalo and Todd Bowles with the Jets.Oddly, every one of those teams also had trouble on offence in 2014.So did the Falcons, the only head coaching vacancy that hasnt been filled. It appears that offensive co-ordinators Josh McDaniels of New England and Adam Gase, Peyton Mannings co-architect in Denver, will have to keep waiting as defensive co-ordinators Dan Quinn of Seattle and Detroits Teryl Austin are the only candidates to get follow-up interviews with the Falcons. If Quinn is the choice, the Falcons will have to wait to offer him the job until after Seattle plays New England in the Super Bowl on Feb. 1.Quinns star rose with the Seahawks 43-8 walloping of Elways Broncos in last years Super Bowl, something NFL Network analyst Terrell Davis believes has driven this defensive shift, along with the aerial fireworks show the league has become. One, you look at who won the Super Bowl last year. Theyve got a formula people want, Davis said. Theyve got a good quarterback and their offence was good; it just wasnt as good as their defence. If you have a good defence, you can mask a lot of deficiencies on offence. And two, it really is about offences in this league and if you can stop them. Then again, Davis said, it could just be coincidence.Maybe it just happens to be the best candidates are defensive coaches, Davis said.Theres no ambiguity about it, insisted former NFL executive and current ESPN analyst Bill Polian. Each hire, each situation is different. Thats one part of the puzzle, Polian said. The second part is the pool of candidates is what it is. In any given year, you might have more people who come from the offensive side of the ball as opposed to the defensive. And third, anybody thats asked for my advice, I have said, Hire the best person regardless of orientation.Because what youre hiring is a head coach. Hes going to hire a defensive co-ordinator. Hes going to hire an offensive co-ordinator. Theyre the ones that are going to determine largely the scheme. So, hire the best person whose philosophy of football fits how you want to operate. The only other factor that should come into the equation is previous head coaching experience, Polian said. That certainly burnished the resumes of Fox, Del Rio and Ryan. Fox was 49-22 in four seasons in Denver even though the Broncos came up short in the playoffs each year.Guys who have been a successful head coach before, theres probably something to be said for that, Polian said.New Bills owner Terry Pegula said experience was the tilting factor in Ryans hiring. In San Francisco, it came down to Tomsula or Gase, but the deciding factor wasnt their backgrounds, CEO Jed York said.Youre not the head coach of the defence. Youre not the head coach of the offence, York said. Youre the head coach of the entire team.Interestingly, teams led by head coaches with offensive roots had an average rank of 16.1 in points per game this season to 16.0 for defensive coaches (excluding the Raiders, who switched mid-season from defensive to offensive). The season started with 16 offensive and 16 defensive coaches. So, there was essentially no difference in performance on average based on the expertise of the head coach.Yeah, if you want to use that metric, Polian said. When you use the word expertise of the coach, would you presume that Bill Belichick knows only defence? OK, so thats my point. If you hire a good coach, he understands both sides of the ball, how it fits, how he wants to do it, how it fits his personnel, etc. etc. Were hiring head coaches here, not co-ordinators.Raiders owner Mark Davis was initially looking for an offensive-minded coach to help quarterback Derek Carr develop, something he told Del Rio in their first conversation. And Jack said, Whoa, whoa, whoa, stop! I know about offence as well, Davis said.Labels dont matter when youre a head coach, Del Rio said, because if youre a defensive guy, quickly you become an offensive guy as well.He pointed to the two coaches who are in the Super Bowl.Bill Belichick was a defensive guy and hes doing a pretty good job with his offence, Del Rio said. Pete Carroll is a defensive guy in his background, but hes doing a pretty good job up there in Seattle with their offence and with their team. So, I think when you hire a head coach, you get that — you get a head coach.___AP Sports Writers Josh Dubow, John Wawrow and Janie McCauley contributed.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Stitched Ducks Jerseys . Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Cheap NFL Jerseys China Online .ca. Hi Kerry, Watching Saturdays Flyers-Canadiens game, Montreals Brendan Gallagher was called for holding in front of the Flyers net in the second period. The colour analyst then said Gallagher - a perennial crease crasher - is in the officials books when it comes to guys to watch for. If such directives are sent, who sends them to the officials and were there such listed players back in your day? Names! Andrew Mitchell, Cobourg, ON Andrew: If there is an internal published list of players for the officials to watch for, its a well-guarded secret at this point. Directives sent to the referees and linesmen originate from the desk of Stephen Walkom - V.P. of Officiating or his counterpart in Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. Regardless of whether a directive has been sent or not, based on what I have observed and previously commented on, Brendan Gallagher has earned a rightful place on the Referees Ten Most Wanted list. Even after committing the holding infraction against Braydon Coburn, Gallagher completed a theatrical dive with both skates into the net in an attempt to fool the referee(s) and as the puck went past Ray Emery. Good for referee Dan ORourke for being dialed in from the neutral zone to make the correct call. I can assure you it was no accident or lucky catch by ORouke. A refs list of known offenders is nothing new and Gallagher is not the only Habs player to be drawing special attention from the refs this season. No one likes to be embarrassed—Diving/embellishment is near the top every refs list! Anyone can check the boxscores on a nightly basis and compile their own list of players that are assessed a diving penalty throughout the season. The refs received direction at their training camp in September to be more vigilant in this area. Several players are already on the radar screen for having been assessed a diving/embellishment penalty. A letter of warning was issued by Hockey Operations to the players so penalized for their first offense as per rule 64.3. As a result of the epidemic-like proportions displayed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season this rule was revised prior to the start of the 2014-15 season to include a graduated fine schedule to be assessed against the player and eventually his head coach to a maximum of $5,000. Hockey Operations has the authority, as in the past, to determine that a player is guilty of embellishment regardless as to whether a penalty is assessed by the referee. The fine imposed against the head coach kicks in after the players third diving/embellishment offense. Prior to my final season on the ice in 2009-10 there was a concerted effort by Hockey Operations and the referees to address the diving issue that was snowballing out of control. The NHLPA opposed Hockey Ops on the subject of sharing an internal list of offenders with the referees for fear of potential targeting. A public list was totally out of the question for fear of any embarrassment it might cause the player. For these reasons Andrew, we never received a specific list of known offenders. What the PA failed to recognize but Hockey Ops did, was three of the oldest forms of communication—telegraph, telephone and tell a Ref! Each member of the officiating staff had his own list of players that duped him or attempted to and wouldnt hold back on sharing the information around the pre-game lunch table or in the dressing room prior to a game. The adage, Fool me once—good for you: Fool me twice—shame on me was adopted by the core group and a known offenders list was mentally compiled and shared freely amongst the referees. There was never a rash of diving penalties called but more of a conscious awareness not to be fooled into calling a penalty as a result of embellishment. It could also work against a known offender who would seldom receive the benefit of the doubt if fouled. This was much easier to accomplish with a veteran staff. There has been a large turnover of the staff through attrition and diving/embellishment has become more prevalent requiring drastic measures to stop the trend. The League is definitely attempting to put a stop to embellishment. I applaud and support Hockey Operations, the Officiating Department and the referees for their efforts. There have been some penalties assessed for diving that I felt were unwarranted but in the big picture it might force players to work harder at staying on their skates. While the game continues to be suffer the embarrassment of diving it is now time for Hockey Ops to publish a list of all offenders who receive a letter or are fined for subsequent offenses—whether penalized on the ice or not. The time is now to publicly expose the players guilty of embellishment and move the known offenders list outside of the referee pipeline. This might go a long way in an effort to deter players from attempting to cheat the game through embellishment — after all, no one likes to be embarrassed. LOS ANGELES -- The Staples Center crowd threw garbage onto the ice in the final minutes when a key call went against the Los Angeles Kings. Antonius Cleveland Jersey . The Anaheim Ducks dodged the debris and kept moving toward the post-season with a gritty win over their biggest rivals. Patrick Maroon scored the go-ahead goal, Frederik Andersen made 37 saves, and the Ducks beat the Kings 2-1 on Saturday night for their third straight win in the Freeway Faceoff. Andersen and the Pacific Division leaders barely held off the Kings, who had a 38-20 shots advantage. An apparent tying goal by Anze Kopitar was waved off with 6:23 left because of incidental contact with Andersen, prompting Kings fans to litter the ice. The Ducks still showed remarkable resilience in another bruising chapter of this rivalry. Tim Jackman scored an early goal for the Ducks, who won back-to-back games at Colorado and Los Angeles after a four-game skid knocked them from their longtime perch atop the overall NHL standings. Anaheim leads San Jose by two points in the division standings, and the Kings are well back in third place. "Its going to be tough for the Kings to catch us now," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Were up 15 points on them with 14 games to play. They were playing so well. We didnt think they were going to lose another game all year. It was important for us to come in here and show we could measure up to them." Tyler Toffoli scored a power-play goal and Martin Jones stopped 18 shots for the Kings, whose eight-game winning streak was snapped Thursday by Toronto. Los Angeles had won each of Anaheims last five visits to Staples Center since November 2011. The late-game controversy added to the lively rivalry in the Southern California clubs first meeting since their outdoor game at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25. Kopitars shot through traffic hit Andersens crossbar and apparently rattled in, but the officials immediately waved off any goal, later announcing Andersen had been hit. "The puck was in, but there was some contact," Andersen said. "I couldnt really stop the puck. The ref did the right thing and made the right call." Replays showed the puck barely crossed the goal line while Marian Gaborik and Anaheims Jakob Silfverberg were next to Andersen.
